The University in the Community

In addition to its standing as a global top 100 university at the forefront of international research, the Hebrew University is deeply involved with the local communities in Jerusalem and Israel. Lecturers and students are active on a voluntary basis in diverse social, cultural and educational activities outside the campus, in keeping with the Hebrew University’s position of responsibility and leadership within the community.

There are countless examples of community involvement initiatives that originated at the university. Some initiatives are ingrained within programs of study at the university, while others are organized by specific units, among them the Authority for Community and Youth and the Dean of Students Office. Other initiatives originate with the Student Union or individual students and staff members.
Serving the community is a value imparted to students irrespective of their formal studies, reflecting the founders’ vision, at the end of the nineteenth century, of a “Hebrew college” in Jerusalem.
