The story of the Hebrew University unfolds over a century of research, teaching, and thought. It takes shape through three central circles that capture the unique spirit of our university.

The first circle is the scientific one. It reflects our passion and mission to generate groundbreaking knowledge. Science is not only the backbone of research but also the foundation for training the next generation of students, who will lead Israeli and international society in addressing the challenges of tomorrow.

The second circle is the human one. On our campuses, a diverse community of academic and administrative staff meets alongside students from all segments of society. We come from different backgrounds, faiths, and worldviews, yet we are united in creating a shared spirit—one of learning, creativity, critical thinking, social responsibility, and shared living. This is a community that encourages asking the right questions, thinking independently, and never taking anything for granted.

The third circle is the social one. Since its earliest days, the University has had a profound impact on Israeli society and beyond. Ideas born here, research conducted here, and our alumni—all have shaped society in transformative ways. The impact is so deep that it is hard to imagine Israel without the Hebrew University.

Our story exists in the interplay of these three circles: a university that achieves remarkable accomplishments yet never rests on its laurels. We seek to weave into it the social and cultural richness of Israeli society—including outstanding young people from the periphery and minority groups (Arabs, ultra orthodox Jews, and others), often the first in their families to pursue higher education, who break glass ceilings and become part of the country’s centers of influence.

Our success as an academic community—and the success of the State of Israel—has always been rooted in the right to think freely. This is a fundamental right guaranteed to every individual, regardless of gender, religion, race, nationality, economic status, or political outlook. Only a democratic, free, and open environment can ensure that we—researchers, teachers, and students—are able to question, innovate, doubt, and develop.

At the Hebrew University, human-made miracles occur every day. Even in times of crisis, like the present moment—even when our values are challenged—we uphold academic excellence, promote diversity and equality, and cultivate a vibrant and free community life. In doing so, we embody a model of co-existence—for Israeli society and for the world. This is my pride.
